REASON TO RIDE...

It was January, 2012 when I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare and incurable blood cancer. As the reality of my cancer began to unfold throughout the course of my treatment, it became monumentally evident how much of an impact this disease would have on my life. Following my diagnosis, I completed nine radiation treatments, five months of IV chemotherapy, Vertebroplasty surgery for the five compression fractures in my spine in December, and a Stem Cell Transplant in July. I am currently on a two year program to receive bi-weekly chemotherapy injections. The "cost of cancer" is unimaginable both in terms of the physical and mental effect it unleashes on your body - in addition to the financial burden associated with transplants, treatments, medications, and hospitalization. On top of these medical costs, cancer patients and their families are also presented with ancillary costs (travel, lodging, parking, food, etc.) all while in the midst of trying to win the biggest battle of their lives.

Fortunately, my wife and I have insurance and the means to pay for the costs associated with my cancer. However, the more time I spent confined to the walls of the hospital, the more time I spent wondering what would happen if we didn't have those means? In talking with my oncologist and social worker, I learned some cancer patients have to forego crucial treatments and procedures because they cannot afford them. What really struck a cord with me was my encounter with a 45 year old mother of five, a fellow Multiple Myeloma patient, who needed a stem cell transplant. Sadly enough, she was unable to get the transplant because her husband lost his job and they could not afford the co-payment. While I realize hospitals and some drug companies can help in reducing the costs of this procedure, it still isn't free and it still is not affordable for some. This was a harsh reality for me to grasp.

AND THEN THERE WAS A RIDE...
From personal experience, I can tell you having cancer is a never-ending battle plagued by constant worry, fear, stress and anxiety. After speaking with the mother of five, I decided I wanted to help alleviate some of the stress and anxiety resulting from the financial burdens so I created the motorcycle ride, Ride For A Purpose. Beginning July 6th, I will begin a 6,000 mile journey to raise awareness and support for Multiple Myeloma. The ride will include various stops at YMCAs and Harley Davidson Dealerships to educate the public on Multiple Myeloma and rally support to help cancer patients pay for ancillary costs. Riders, too will be encouraged to help raise money. Please note 100% of all proceeds will be donated to Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute and will help individuals with all types of cancer not just Multiple Myeloma .

I proudly invite you to support Multiple Myeloma patients and welcome you to join Ride For A Purpose so you can tell others you Rode for A Purpose! Please share this event and website with family, friends and co-workers! For additional information, please contact me at rideforapurpose@gmail.com.

My deepest appreciation and most sincere gratitude,
